Hall chairs were usually supplied in sets. A pair of armchairs very probably from the same set were sold by Christie’s in 1968. Another set of six armchairs of virtually identical design were retailed by Ayer & Co. in 1949. One chair in this set was signed and dated ‘George Marshall, 7 April 1772’.
Given the similarity between our chair and the set of six, it is very likely that they came from the same workshop and were made at around the same time.
