Producing mirror plates of this size was a major achievement. Unlike modern sheet glass production, in which molten glass is cast flat and then rolled out between metal rollers, in the 18th century the size of the plate was determined by the makers’ lung capacity. Large glass bubbles were blown, shaped into cylinders and then split or sliced open in order to flatten the glass into sheets. The sheets were then ground smooth and silvered.
