John Ellicott was a highly esteemed clockmaker who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1738 for his scientific achievements in improving clock accuracy. He went on to be appointed Clockmaker to the King in 1762. Ellicott was an early supporter of Thomas Coram’s Foundling Hospital in London, where the clock that he donated still remains.
