The marble top is a rare and fortunate survivor. The original marble tops of many other tables were replaced when the type of marble or its colour no longer suited a new decorative scheme. Unusually, in this case the original marble was retained and was simply painted over in a darker colour and then marbled.
A related pair of tables, similarly constructed and featuring swags of floral garlands above a basket of fruit and cone finials, were part of the original furnishings of Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire, for the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. These tables were also painted off-white.
