The table belongs to a small group of related tables all sharing a similar outline, high quality brass mounts and marquetry of exceptional quality. John Cobb was William Vile’s younger partner, and together they held the Royal Warrant from 1751 until 1764.
After Vile’s death, Cobb’s furniture shows a transition in style towards the rococo, with an emphasis on veneered surfaces, often with finely engraved marquetry and luxurious brass mounts, in contrast to Vile’s fine carvings.
