This type of desk chair is today often referred to as a ‘Bank of England’ chair. Although there is no evidence that such chairs were designed specifically for the Bank of England, similar versions may well have been used by clerks there.
The back support forms a cross. This unusual feature, perhaps indicating a Scottish influence, is a pleasing contrast to the standard vase-shaped back splat.
