Another stool and seven side chairs from the same suite, also featuring the ink inscription to the inside of the rails, were sold by Phillips on 20 April 1999.
The undersides of the chairs feature not only Chippendale’s typical clamping notches but also baton holes to the underside of the rails. These baton holes indicate that the suite was made not for a London home but for a more distant destination, and it therefore required securing with batons for transport.
