A Catherine the Great ormolu mounted roswewood marquetry serpentine side table attributed to Christian Meyer.
Note: Small losses of ormolu section have been replaced by later castings. A printed linen label is pasted to the reverse of the table: ‘CAPT MICHAIL/W ART ELL OR. MRS 225/APL 5 1922’.
This unusual side table fits in with the oeuvre of Christian Meyer of St. Petersburg. Following the influence of David Roentgen in Russia under the Empress Catherine the Great, Meyer became the main supplier of furnishings to the imperial court.
Meyer is recognised for the exceptional quality of his ormolu mounts, and the distinctive castings on this table can be found on other pieces ascribed to his workshop. The choice of plain yet sophisticated exotic veneers is also typical of his work.
Provenance
Perhaps Mikhailovsky Palace, St. Petersburg, Russia;
