Note: With repairs to the platform below the top finial. The clock retains the original brass mounts typical of Ellicott timepieces made towards the end of his career, in particular the unusual rococo bracket feet and the rococo spandrels.
John Ellicott was a highly esteemed clockmaker who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1738 for his scientific achievements in improving clock accuracy. He went on to be appointed Clockmaker to the King in 1762. Ellicott was an early supporter of Thomas Coram’s Foundling Hospital in London, where the clock that he donated still remains.
