A pair of George III mahogany library armchairs in the manner of Thomas Chippendale and attributed to Wright & Elwick.
The design of these chairs derives from plate XIX of Chippendale’s third edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker’s Director, published in 1762. The strong outswept arms suggest the firm of Wright & Elwick as the maker. Wright & Elwick supplied a similar suite of chairs to the Earl of Swinton for Swinton House in Yorkshire and the Duke of Rockingham for Wentworth Woodhouse, also in Yorkshire.
A pair of chairs of the same model were advertised by Cecil Partridge in the Connoisseur in 1922.
Provenance
Private collection, England.
Literature
The Connoisseur magazine, May 1922, p. XXXI, advertisement with Cecil Partridge.
