A set of eight George III giltwood open armchairs attributed to John Linnell.
Note: The frames have been re-gilded.
The chairs were once part of an extensive set of at least twenty, of which only these eight remained with the family at Brynkinalt. Twelve chairs were acquired by Edward McGuire to furnish Newtown Park House, Dublin, Ireland, bought by him in 1946. Newtown Park House was a mere shell at the time, and McGuire furnished it over the following decades.
The Newtown Park chairs feature in a photograph of the dining room taken in 1947, in the Irish Architectural Archive, Dublin.
The set of eight feature in the West Drawing Room in photographs taken at Brynkinalt in the 1980s, together with a number of other pieces of furniture supplied by the Linnell workshop, suggesting a substantial commission for the firm at the time.
