A George III giltwood overmantel attributed to Thomas Johnson.
Note: The mirror retains virtually all of the original mirror plates. The frame has been re-gilded and the carved figure on the top is of later date.
An inventory taken in 1949 at Wynyard Park lists the overmantel in the Drawing Room: ‘An ornamental mirror in giltwood frame finely carved with rococo scrollwork and floral motifs and with figures of animals on small brackets. Width 5ft 4 in.’
Although no specific drawing for this exceptionally finely carved mirror is known, the overall style of the carving and virtuosity of design suggest that Thomas Johnson was the designer and possibly also the carver.
Provenance
John Tempest (1710–1776) for Wynyard Park, County Durham, England;
by descent to Frances Anne Vane-Tempest, later Marchioness of Londonderry (1800–1865);
by descent with the Marquesses of Londonderry at Wynyard Park, County Durham, England.
